Counterdict

I recently received an email with the word "counterdict" in it.

This is just a friendly reminder so none of you make the same mistake – "counterdict" is actually spelled "contradict".

Please?

I heard (swore I heard) "counterdict" in a file I was just transcribing, and knew that either it was not a word or it was a very esoteric word that few people use. Had to search it, and found this two year old post. VERY helpful (since my tired mind knew it was similar to another word but couldn't come up with what it was). With "contradict" in my mind, I could hear that his accent made it sound like counterdict, but he was, in fact, saying contradict. Since this file is going very public with my name on it, I am very grateful to your help in figuring out what was REALLY said.

Contradict is one of those words that are very commonly mispronounced, and it could easily be argued that "Counterdict" has almost become an acceptable pronunciation. Another common example is "mischievous" which should be pronounced with three syllables but is more commonly pronounced in the four syllable variation, "mis-chee-vee-ous"
