The Ants Go Marching One By One

Do you remember learning the "Ants Go Marching" song when you were a kid? I don't. I just remember knowing it and hearing it. I think it was sung during a class in grade school for some reason, but I don't remember it ever being taught.

It amazes me that such a long, and nonsensical, song can be so widespread. But I guess that's common with kids songs. Really common if you actually try to remember a few more songs that you learned during your childhood. Another commonality with many kids songs is that no one knows who wrote it, but really, if you wrote something about ants marching, would you admit to it? I might.

The Ants Go Marching is sung to the tune of "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" which is an old American Civil War song. It's a good catchy marching tune, and I'm sure it's been used as the basis for many marching songs since. Musical Recycling is another trend in kids songs, take Twinkle Twinkle Little Star as an example. It shares its tune with the ABC (Alphabet) song and Baa Baa Black Sheep – probably even more than that.

The lyrics to Ants Go Marching, just because:

The ants go marching one by one, hurrah, hurrah
The ants go marching one by one, hurrah, hurrah
The ants go marching one by one,
The little one stops to suck his thumb
And they all go marching down to the ground
To get out of the rain, BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

The ants go marching two by two, hurrah, hurrah
The ants go marching two by two, hurrah, hurrah
The ants go marching two by two,
The little one stops to tie his shoe
And they all go marching down to the ground
To get out of the rain, BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

The ants go marching three by three, hurrah, hurrah
The ants go marching three by three, hurrah, hurrah
The ants go marching three by three,
The little one stops to climb a tree
And they all go marching down to the ground
To get out of the rain, BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

The ants go marching four by four, hurrah, hurrah
The ants go marching four by four, hurrah, hurrah
The ants go marching four by four,
The little one stops to shut the door
And they all go marching down to the ground
To get out of the rain, BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

The ants go marching five by five, hurrah, hurrah
The ants go marching five by five, hurrah, hurrah
The ants go marching five by five,
The little one stops to take a dive
And they all go marching down to the ground
To get out of the rain, BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

The ants go marching six by six, hurrah, hurrah
The ants go marching six by six, hurrah, hurrah
The ants go marching six by six,
The little one stops to pick up sticks
And they all go marching down to the ground
To get out of the rain, BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

The ants go marching seven by seven, hurrah, hurrah
The ants go marching seven by seven, hurrah, hurrah
The ants go marching seven by seven,
The little one stops to pray to heaven
And they all go marching down to the ground
To get out of the rain, BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

The ants go marching eight by eight, hurrah, hurrah
The ants go marching eight by eight, hurrah, hurrah
The ants go marching eight by eight,
The little one stops to shut the gate
And they all go marching down to the ground
To get out of the rain, BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

The ants go marching nine by nine, hurrah, hurrah
The ants go marching nine by nine, hurrah, hurrah
The ants go marching nine by nine,
The little one stops to check the time
And they all go marching down to the ground
To get out of the rain, BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

The ants go marching ten by ten, hurrah, hurrah
The ants go marching ten by ten, hurrah, hurrah
The ants go marching ten by ten,
The little one stops to say "THE END"
And they all go marching down to the ground
To get out of the rain, BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

MindMeister License Codes [Mind Mapping Software]

About four months ago I started to get into the idea of using mind mapping to brainstorm and plan out ideas and projects. At the time, I was looking for a service that was easy to use, fast, would allow me to collaborate with others on a single mind map, and would allow me to access the maps from both work and home.

One of the best that I found was MindMeister. Unfortunately, their free service only allows for something like five mind maps on an account at one time, so I was afraid of outgrowing it.. and eventually just stopped using it.

This morning I got an email from them reminding me that I haven't logged in for about four months and offering me their "sleeper package" – a license code good for 2 free months of their paid features, and 5 additional 2-month licenses for me to give to friends.

So….
I'll give them to any of you, if you want them. 🙂 The first 5 people to leave a comment asking for a promo code will get them.

(I still use mind mapping occasionally, but my setup is a bit different. I use the open source program Freemind, and then use the DropBox service to synchronize the map files (along with a bunch of other stuff) between my laptop and my work PC.)

Herbal Herbs

According to google, there are around 6,000 searches a month for "herbal herbs". Why?

Personally, I'd be more interested in finding some "non-herbal herbs".

YouTube Video: ZSL Babies 2008

I can't resist the videos of baby animals. This is a nice collection of footage from little guys born in 2008 at the ZSL London and Whipsnade zoos.

YouTube Video: Molecular Visualizations of DNA

I thought this video was amazing and had to share it. The mechanical processes that make up building and copying DNA, transcribing DNA to RNA, and creating proteins from RNA is incredible, especially when you realize that this happens constantly in every cell bajillions of cells in your body!

Molecular Visualizations of DNA

"Amazing CGI visualization of molecular biology's central dogma. It shows animations of DNA coiling, replication, transcription and translation.
It was created by Drew Berry of the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research"

Caution: Raptors Ahead!

You may have heard, about a week ago, of highway signs in Austin, TX that were "hacked" to display warnings of the zombie apocalypse.

Well… this is even better.. but the same–ish.

Highway signs in Indiana were changed to warn motorists that they were encroaching upon raptor territory.

… which is just a nice way of saying that the other half are dumber than average.
