Google SketchUp
If anyone is unfamiliar with SketchUp, it's a great little 3D modeling program that was acquired by google quite some time ago. I've used it before, briefly, but never had any real reason to get serious with it. I still don't, really, but I've taken another stab at it.
Right now I have two projects in mind for SketchUp: 1) designing some cheap furniture and then running off with plans to lumber store and finally building myself some chairs and a couch, and 2) modeling lego blocks and using them to create amazing lego thingies!
Yeah!

building your own furniture. that's great. I've built a few pieces in my time. Many of which eventually found their way into a dumpster or two. But that's ok. As a furniture designer you can not be afraid of the dumpster. I hope you have plenty of bar clamps. They are quite handy.
