I'm Secretly A Good Person

I know.. it's hard to believe – even I'm having a hard time fully accepting it. As much as (don't ask me why) I'm comfortable with the image of being an uncaring, lazy, jerk (I judge myself pretty hard) I'm catching myself completely contradicting it.

I've always been willing to help people – if I'm asked, and asked nicely. I have no ambition whatsoever when it comes to helping people that make it seem like you owe them something, or you're obligated to do something, which I think most people can understand and relate to. But if you're geniune, I'm right there by your side.

But lately.. I've noticed myself going much higher above and beyond what is expected. And enjoying it more. See – it's not entirely selfless, I'm earning happiness by helping other people.

It's not just helping people though – I'm trying really hard to treat people the way I want to be treated. Yeah, I fail miserably with some people, but they deserve it! 😛  Try it. Compliment someone on their haircut (mine is awesome btw!), call up someone that you haven't talked to for awhile and just see how their doing, whatever.

If you do something incredible, let me know.. I'll buy you a pasta dinner. You have to come here to redeem it though.

You Should NOT Be Driving

There are just too many stupid people behind the wheel. To give idiots the privilege to operate a vehicle that has the potential to take another person's life is irresponsible for a society.

Yesterday afternoon, while we were heading home from work, there was an accident on Main Street right in front of campus. Now, being curious, we had to go look. My assumption was that two of our brilliant students decided to drive their cars in the same spot at the same time – since they kind of tend to do that for some reason.

I was NOT expecting to see a wheelchair on its side. With a person in it. Not moving. I didn't get a great look at him, but I'm pretty sure I know who it was. I've helped him before in the library. Him and his friend didn't know my name and referred to me to a librarian as "that really nice guy that helped us." It's rare that someone can make my day like that, and such a person deserves better than this.

Needless to say, I have this bizarre absolutely crushing pain coursing through me. My thoughts are clouded. I'm just really upset.

Maybe it's not as bad as it looked.. but it looked really bad. And what makes it even worse, it was right where they installed the new blinking Pedestrian Crossing signs.

That Silly "Science" Thing

I overheard a girl say "I don't believe in science. I only believe in things I can see."

I.. but.. WHAT?!

From wikipedia:

Science (from the Latin scientia, meaning "knowledge" or "to know") is the effort to discover, and increase human understanding of how the physical world works. Through controlled methods, scientists use observable physical evidence of natural phenomena to collect data, and analyze this information to explain what and how things work. Such methods include experimentation that tries to simulate natural phenomena under controlled conditions and thought experiments. Knowledge in science is gained through research.

"Seeing" is a form of observation. Knowledge is.. knowledge.

It completely breaks my head that she would need to come up with such a stupid way of saying "I'm stupid." Sometimes I wonder about people.

Just Stuff

I just deleted 128 spam comments from this blog that you're currently reading (why are you doing that?) 128! I had made a few changes weeks ago and went down from an average of 30-40/day to less than 10. And now I suddenly get slammed with 128 overnight. I've got one more trick up my sleave to cut the number of spam comments down substantially, but I'm too lazy to code it up and implement it right now. Actually, I'm too busy ( I get those confused sometimes) – I'm doing quite a bit of (paid) web development right now.

Other than my brief freak-out about the number of spam comments, not much going on right now. I'm doing a bit more singing now, which made for an awesome Saturday night. It's incredible when you get done singing and people demand that you go back up. It's also fun to get tired of a song halfway through, turn to my guitar player, and say (into the microphone) "I don't want to sing this one anymore.. let's just stop."

I Need To Stop Sleeping

Last night I had a bizarre set of dreams, but one of the dreams stands out more than the others.

I don't remember where I was, or what I was doing, but I found two things that looked like drink coasters. One of them was plain and nondescript while the other was shiny-black and looked to have some sort of battery pack on it. Through the bizarre act of placing a glass of water on the coasters I discovered that the plain coaster turned water into the most perfect Pilsner beer ever, the black battery powered beast turned water into pomegranate juice – don't ask, it was a dream (it also produced a white powder under the glass and kept tipping glasses of pomegranate juice over).

And no one cared. I had these bizarre, magical coasters, and no one seemed to think they were anything out of the ordinary.

And then I was bitten by a cobra snake in my kitchen.

I woke up and had to look under my bed for snakes.

Poor Risk Assessment

Last night I saw a man (I think it was a man) practically asking to have his life taken away.

I was driving home last night just before 8:30. It wasn't completely dark out, but enough that playing next to (or on) the highway was probably not a good idea. Probably really not a good idea. Traffic was pretty busy for that time of night, and I noticed up ahead that next to all the oncoming traffic was a single unmoving light. It looked like a motorcycle, and I figured someone had just pulled off the road for some reason.

As I got closer, I saw stuff scattered all over my side of the road, and before I could figure out what it was, I noticed a person standing along the right edge of the road (on the opposite side of the road as the motorcycle). If you've never had a person appear out of nowhere, right in front of your car, in the dark.. well, it's kind of frightening. So now I had to move over to give him room, and avoid whatever the hell was all over the road.

I managed both.

But looking in my rearview-mirror, I saw a mighty *fwooosh* of papers flying in the air and scattering further on the road and realized what it was that I had just swerved to avoid hitting. This guy must have dropped a bunch of paper while he was riding, and was now playing a real-life version of Frogger, trying to reclaim whatever these papers were.

What could be on those dozens of sheets of paper that someone would risk their life for them?
