IDEA: Rail Roads

I love the idea of self driving cars, but didn't we kind of had something similar for awhile and systematically got rid of them? Trains?

A standardized rail system (either one or two rails per lane) built into new roads could allow for a new generation of self driving cars to lock in to a track, or use it as a guide to stay on the road rather than using more complicated computerized sensor systems.

I really like your idea. We should have more trains. Or even trains to be the real automated transit system. However, many people don't like to walk short distances. They want to have their car go right up to the door of wherever they are going.

Of course, people should just walk the short distance from a train stop to their home, but America can be really dumb with certain things.

Trains would be great if we could do something like this and build out a useful rail system. I've seen "self-driving buses" mentioned as something we may see in the future for mass transit, but how scary is that? Rails and vehicles that stay on those rails seem a lot less intimidating than a bus driving itself.

We need a strong push towards a bike + public transportation society, but our current culture will fight that. Self driving Uber-like cars will revolutionize transportation and disrupt the heck out of the economy. Why own a car and pay insurance when a vehicle will just pick you up whenever you need it? Why have a huge garage on your house when you just need to store some bikes and tools?

You already know this, but your last two questions are the reasons why I have never owned a car in my life. I made life choices where I lived and worked by mass transit.

Now that I've been married for 7 months, I've seen some benefits of car transit. However, it still feels really weird to me to just hop into the car. It can be really tempting to just use the car instead of the train.

I guess my comment has no point.
